Molony joins Davis & Elkins in 2024 after one season at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri. During his time at Jewell, Molony developed and coached 2023 NCAA Division II Rookie of the Year candidate, Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Freshman of the Year, and All-GLVC Second Team selection John Gholson. A true freshman, Gholson finished the year with a 19-10 record and placed fourth at the NCAA Division II Super Regional IV Tournament, making him an alternate for the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament at 184 pounds.
Hired in mid-August 2022, Molony inherited a William Jewell team with only seven returning wrestlers and a recruiting class reduced by half before he was named head coach. Despite the limited roster, Molony, his assistant coaches, and wrestlers nearly quadrupled their team points in Super Region IV from 2022 to 2023. With a lineup consisting of six freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior transfer, the team earned its first two dual meet wins in the NCAA era, after going 0-13 before Molony took the helm. One wrestler reached the 20-win mark, another finished with 19 wins, and two others finished with at least 10 wins for the season.
Prior to William Jewell, Molony spent two seasons (2020-22) as head coach of Calumet College of St. Joseph in Hammond, Indiana, where he gained valuable experience leading a young program. In their lone season of non-COVID competition (2021-22), he and his staff coached one NAIA national qualifier, an American Midwest Conference champion, and two other top-three conference finishers.
Before his time at Calumet, Molony was an assistant coach at Elmhurst College (NCAA DIII) from 2016-18 and 2019-20, working under former NCAA Division I National Champion (1995) and USA World placewinner (1998), Steve Marianetti. At Elmhurst, Molony mentored four conference champions, seven national qualifiers, and two All-Americans, contributing to the team’s 2017 CCIW team championship.
Molony began his college coaching career at Triton College (NJCAA) in River Grove, Illinois, as assistant head coach to Hall of Fame head coach Harry McGinnis. From 2011-14, Molony coached and mentored 15 national qualifiers and one All-American.
Molony is a U.S. Air Force veteran (1993-97), where he spent three years training and competing in Olympic freestyle at Whiteman Air Force Base. He earned his bachelor's degree in English from Northern Illinois University in 2001.
A native of Chicagoland, Molony is the proud father of William, 20; Violet, 18; Delilah, 17; Charles, 15; and Thomas, 12.
