Mark Walters comes to Davis and Elkins College with a reputation for successfully rebuilding programs, Walters has a quarter-century of collegiate head coaching experience and owns 713 wins across NCAA Divisions I and II in his career, which ranks him among the elite in Division II. He is currently among the top 15 Division II national active coaching leaders in total wins (713, 14th) and men’s win percentage (.747, 12th) as of Fall 2024. He joined the career 700-win club in April of 2022.
Walters, a Morgantown, W. Va. native, has 26 years of head coaching experience. He has previously built nationally ranked programs at Lincoln Memorial, West Virginia Wesleyan, Barton College, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney in Division II. Walters also served as the head coach at Division I West Virginia University from 2006-2010.
Academically, Walters’ teams have been stellar amongst their peers. Each of his first two D&E teams received ITA All-Academic Team honors (3.2+), and the 2024 squads boasted no fewer than 12 ITA Scholar-Athletes (3.5+ GPA) on the rosters. This marked the 45th time out of his 50 combined teams that have earned this academic recognition award. His women’s team turned in a 3.354 GPA in 2023, while the men compiled a 3.556 GPA. Their 3.72 Spring GPA was tops among all men’s athletic programs at D&E.
Walters was appointed to and is currently serving on the D2 ITA National Tennis Operations committee, and he has served on many NCAA and ITA regional committees for the Atlantic, Midwest, and Southeastern regions. He has directed 5 ITA Regional championship tournaments, including the 2018 & 2019 Men’s Atlantic regional in Charleston, W. Va., as well as the Southeast regionals in Wilson, N.C. three times. He is also the ITA rankings chair.
During his tenure in DI and DII, he has amassed 12 DII NCAA regional qualifications, a Sweet 16 appearance, and eleven conference titles between the men’s and women’s programs over his career.
A 1987 graduate of Fairmont State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology, Walters received his Master of Science degree in sport administration/athletic coaching from West Virginia in 1992.
He has two sons, Jameson (21), a senior Sport Management major at Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) and member of the Golf team, and Jarrett (19) who is a sophomore Business major at Davis & Elkins (W. Va.) and is a member of the baseball team. Both are Dean’s List Students and All-Conference Academic team honorees.
