Box Score 2 SALISBURY, N.C. — The Davis & Elkins College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday on day two of the 5th Set Invitational, hosted by Catawba College and Belmont Abbey College at Goodman Arena.
The Senators fell to Erskine College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-15), before dropping a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-15) decision to Winston-Salem State University.
GAME ONE: ERSKINE 3, D&E 0
Davis & Elkins opened the day against Erskine College, falling in three sets.
The Senators battled throughout the opening set before Erskine secured a 25-20 victory. D&E struggled to find its rhythm offensively in the second set as Erskine claimed a 25-17 win before closing out the match with a 25-15 third-set victory.
Sophomore Alexandra Mattey led the Senators with eight kills while adding 11 digs and two service aces. Rylan Sharp and Jezabel Bernard each recorded five kills.
Liene Dujin paced the D&E offense with 16 assists, while Emily Besten added 10 assists. Neve Norris led the defensive effort with 13 digs, followed by Mattey with 11.
D&E finished the match with 28 kills, three aces, two blocks, 27 assists and 53 digs.
GAME TWO: WINSTON-SALEM STATE 3, D&E 0
The Senators returned to the court Saturday afternoon against Winston-Salem State, falling 3-0.
D&E came within two points of taking the opening set, but Winston-Salem State edged the Senators, 26-24. The Rams then claimed the second set, 25-19, before completing the sweep with a 25-15 third-set victory.
Mattey again led the Senators offensively with seven kills, while Brenneman and Norris each added five kills. Brenneman hit .364 for the match, finishing with five kills on 11 attacks with just one error.
Besten led D&E with 11 assists, while Dujin recorded six assists. Demankowski anchored the defensive effort with 16 digs, followed by Norris with 13.
Bernard recorded two blocks, while Brenneman and Kaylee Vanjo each added one. Besten and Vanjo contributed two and one service aces, respectively.
D&E finished the match with 26 kills, six aces, three blocks, 22 assists and 47 digs.
