CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins men's tennis fell 4-0 to the University of Charleston in the Mountain East Conference Championship match Saturday morning.
The Golden Eagles captured the conference title by taking the doubles point and carrying that momentum into singles play to secure the win.
Charleston earned victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to claim the early advantage. Justus Petersilie and Philipp Fedorczuk dropped a 6-0 decision at the top spot, while Simon Kiekbeld and Filippo Buffo fell 6-1 at No. 3. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Christo Wirahadipoernomo and Tom Strohschein trailed 4-3 when the match went unfinished.
In singles, Charleston added three quick points to clinch the match. Petersilie fell 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Christo Wirahadipoernomo was defeated 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3. The match was decided at No. 4 singles, where Tom Strohschein dropped a 7-6, 7-2 tiebreak, 6-2 contest.
Matches at several positions went unfinished following the clinch. Philipp Fedorczuk was trailing at No. 1 singles, while Filippo Buffo (No. 5) and Santiago Ordonez (No. 6) were also in progress when play was halted.
