Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball honored its senior class Friday afternoon at Joni Smith Field before dropping both games of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to Concord, falling 12-6 in game one and 14-3 in game two.
The Senators recognized seniors Alyssa Haynes, Gweny Wessling, Trinity Fleming, Ashlyn Zapach, Allie Cuellar, and Saylor Kneeland in a pregame ceremony. Despite the results, Davis & Elkins secured the No. 4 seed in the MEC North Division and will face South Division No. 1 Charleston on Wednesday, May 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia.
Game One: Concord 12, Davis & Elkins 6
Concord used a strong opening inning and consistent offensive pressure to take game one of the doubleheader.
The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning behind a three-run home run from Madison Hollis and a solo shot from Alina Giles. Davis & Elkins answered with three runs in the bottom half, as Ashlyn Zapach delivered an RBI single and Alyssa Haynes drove in a run on a fielder's choice before later scoring to cut the deficit to one.
After Concord added a run in the second, Audrey Higgins brought the Senators back within one with a solo home run in the third inning, making it 5-4.
The Mountain Lions responded with three runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Hollis, to extend the lead. Davis & Elkins answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-RBI double from Lorena Ruiz-Rubio to make it 8-6.
That would be as close as the Senators would get, as Concord added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Hollis led Concord with three hits and eight RBIs in the contest.
Davis & Elkins totaled 10 hits, with Ruiz-Rubio, Zapach, and Trinity Fleming each recording two hits. Haynes added an RBI and a stolen base in the effort.
Saylor Kneeland made the start in the circle, while Kendal Tellings took the loss in relief.
Game Two: Concord 14, Davis & Elkins 3
Concord completed the sweep with a late offensive surge, scoring 11 runs over the final three innings to pull away for a 14-3 victory.
After three scoreless innings, Concord broke through in the fourth inning with an RBI double from Kayla Sholter. The Mountain Lions added two more runs in the fifth before a four-run sixth inning, capped by a three-run home run from Lacie Lewis, extended the lead to 7-0.
Davis & Elkins responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Trinity Fleming drove in a run with a single and Alyssa Haynes followed with a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Concord answered in the seventh inning with seven runs on multiple extra-base hits, including home runs from Lewis and Hollis, to secure the win.
Fleming and Haynes accounted for all three RBIs for the Senators, while Gweny Wessling recorded one of the team's three hits.
Saylor Kneeland started in the circle, while Sammie Jarvis was charged with the loss in relief. Isabelle Thomas also saw action.
Davis & Elkins concludes the regular season at 15-39 overall and turns its attention to the MEC Tournament, where the Senators will face Charleston on Wednesday.
