Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball dropped both games of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Glenville State on Wednesday at Joni Smith Field, falling 17-0 in five innings in game one before a late rally came up short in a 7-6 loss in game two.
Game One: Glenville State 17, Davis & Elkins 0 (5 innings)
Glenville State used a dominant offensive showing in the second inning to take control early and never looked back in a five-inning run-rule victory.
The Pioneers plated nine runs in the second inning, highlighted by a pair of home runs from Delany Warnick and Hannah Howe, along with multiple extra-base hits throughout the frame. Glenville State added two more runs in the third and six in the fifth to extend the lead to 17-0.
Warnick led the way with two home runs and five RBIs, while Shelby McDaniels added four RBIs. Emily Nolan finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, and Zailees Seda recorded two hits and two RBIs.
Davis & Elkins managed three hits in the contest, with Trinity Fleming, Sammie Jarvis, and Audrey Higgins each recording one. Fleming accounted for the Senators' lone extra-base hit with a double.
Kendal Tellings took the loss in the circle after allowing nine runs in 1.2 innings of work. Isabelle Thomas and Andrea Pannell provided relief efforts for the Senators.
Game Two: Glenville State 7, Davis & Elkins 6
Davis & Elkins responded with a strong effort in game two but could not hold off a late Glenville State rally, as the Pioneers scored four runs in the seventh inning to secure the sweep.
Glenville State struck first in the third inning, but the Senators answered with a five-run frame to take a 5-1 lead. Madison Smith delivered an RBI double, while Trinity Fleming added a two-run double in the inning. Alyssa Haynes contributed an RBI groundout, and the Senators capitalized on a Glenville State error to round out the scoring.
The Pioneers chipped away with two runs in the sixth before Davis & Elkins added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning when Gweny Wessling reached on an error to make it 6-3.
Holding a three-run lead entering the seventh, the Senators were unable to close it out. Glenville State strung together timely hits, including a go-ahead two-RBI single from Hannah Howe, to complete the comeback.
Fleming led Davis & Elkins with two RBIs, while Smith, Wessling, and Haynes each drove in a run. The Senators totaled six hits in the contest.
Sammie Jarvis went the distance in the circle, striking out seven but taking the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits.
Davis & Elkins returns to action on Friday, May 1, hosting Concord University for a doubleheader at Joni Smith Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., with game two set for 4 p.m.
