Senators Respond with 12-2 Win to Split with Yellow Jackets

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at West Virginia State on Monday, falling 8-0 in game one before bouncing back with a 12-2 win in game two at Lady Jackets Field in Institute, West Virginia.

Game One: West Virginia State 8, Davis & Elkins 0

Davis & Elkins was limited to just two hits as West Virginia State pulled away with a late offensive surge to take game one.

The Yellow Jackets broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a throwing error to plate the game's first run. West Virginia State then erupted for six runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Autumn Hall and a string of RBI opportunities aided by walks and defensive miscues.

West Virginia State added an insurance run in the sixth to secure the 8-0 victory.

Lorena Ruiz-Rubio and Audrey Higgins each recorded a hit for the Senators, who totaled just two hits in the contest.

Saylor Kneeland (3-10) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits over 4.1 innings. Kendal Tellings worked the final inning, giving up one run on three hits.

Game Two: Davis & Elkins 12, West Virginia State 2

The Senators responded in a big way in game two, erupting for 12 runs on 17 hits to earn the split.

Davis & Elkins got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single from Ashlyn Zapach, then added three runs in the second inning behind RBI hits from Sammie Jarvis and Zapach.

The Senators broke the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs to extend the lead to 9-0. Lorena Ruiz-Rubio delivered a two-RBI single, while additional runs came via aggressive baserunning and a wild pitch.

Davis & Elkins continued to add on with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cap the 12-2 victory.

Ruiz-Rubio led the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Zapach drove in three runs. Jarvis added two hits and an RBI, and Madison Smith finished with three hits and two runs scored. Gweny Wessling also contributed two hits and two RBIs.

Jarvis (4-6) earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Davis & Elkins returns to action on Thursday, April 30, hosting Glenville State for a doubleheader at Joni Smith Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by game two at 3 p.m.
