Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins baseball split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with West Virginia State on Saturday at Calvin L. Bailey Field, falling 15-1 in game one before earning a 6-3 victory in game two.
Game One: West Virginia State 15, Davis & Elkins 1
West Virginia State used a dominant middle innings surge to pull away from Davis & Elkins in a 15-1 victory in the opener.
After three scoreless innings, the Yellow Jackets broke through in the fourth with a pair of runs to take the early lead. Davis & Elkins answered in the fifth when Dylan Leadbetter doubled to drive in Aiden Morey, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The hosts responded with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run, before erupting for eight runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach at 15-1.
Leadbetter paced the Senators with a hit and an RBI, while Morey scored the lone run. Carsan Strolla, Zach Calef-Boring and Joel Wise each added hits in the loss.
Dallas Rasmussen was charged with the loss, allowing two runs over 3.2 innings while striking out four. Five Senators pitchers saw action in the contest.
Game Two: Davis & Elkins 6, West Virginia State 3
Davis & Elkins responded in game two with a strong all-around performance, earning a 6-3 win to split the doubleheader.
West Virginia State struck first with a two-run home run in the opening inning, but the Senators answered in the second. Joel Wise led off with a solo home run before Brody Rumon launched a three-run homer later in the inning to give Davis & Elkins a 4-2 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets added a run in the bottom half of the second to trim the deficit to 4-3, but Mason Brenneman extended the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Davis & Elkins added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single from Leadbetter.
Rumon, Wise and Brenneman each homered to lead the Senators offensively, while Leadbetter added an RBI. Zach Calef-Boring, Jett Walters and Aiden Morey each recorded hits in the win.
Collin Schneider earned the win with a complete game performance, allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out four.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Sunday, April 26, for another MEC doubleheader at West Virginia State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two set for 3:30 p.m. in Institute, West Virginia.
