Box Score WASHINGTON, Pa. — Davis & Elkins baseball dropped a Mountain East Conference contest to Wheeling, 9-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Wild Things Stadium.
The Senators (4-38) struck first in the opening inning when Zach Calef-Boring delivered an RBI single to center field, scoring Kenny Capria for an early 1-0 lead. Wheeling responded in the bottom half of the inning and never trailed again.
The Cardinals (31-11) broke the game open with a three-run second inning, highlighted by a solo home run from Kale Wilkins and a two-RBI single from Gavin Millians to make it 4-1. Wheeling added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings and plated three more in the sixth to extend its advantage.
Calef-Boring led the Senators offensively, going 2-for-3 with the lone RBI. Capria added a hit and scored the team's only run, while Grant Mealey, Carsan Strolla and Aiden Morey each recorded a hit in the loss.
On the mound, Mark Shelley got the start before Cade Walters (0-1) was charged with the loss. Dallas Rasmussen tossed two scoreless innings in relief, while Andy Bailer and Bryce Hines combined to allow just one run over the final three frames.
Kyle Binder (3-0) earned the win for Wheeling, tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Saturday, April 25, for a road doubleheader at West Virginia State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by game two at 3:30 p.m. in Institute, W. Va.
