Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball hosted West Virginia Wesleyan in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Joni Smith Field, with the Senators showing early fight in both games before the Bobcats pulled away late to take game one 9-1 and game two 12-1.
Game One: West Virginia Wesleyan 9, Davis & Elkins 1
Davis & Elkins opened game one with early composure before West Virginia Wesleyan used a pair of big innings to take control.
After the Bobcats scored in the first inning, the Senators answered in the third when Madison Smith crossed home plate following a defensive miscue to even the score at 1-1. The Senators held firm early behind steady pitching and defense to keep the game within reach.
West Virginia Wesleyan broke through in the fourth inning with a five-run frame that included home runs from Gracey Arnold and Giana DeSpirito, along with RBI hits from Lynzee Hague, Madison Austra, and Reagan Winn. The Bobcats added three more runs in the fifth to close out the opener.
On the mound, Davis & Elkins used a combined effort. Sammie Jarvis made the start before Kendal Tellings entered in relief for 1.1 innings. Jarvis later returned to finish the game in the circle.
Offensively, Gweny Wessling and Lorena Ruiz-Rubio accounted for the Senators' two hits.
Game Two: West Virginia Wesleyan 12, Davis & Elkins 1
Davis & Elkins again showed early resilience in game two, briefly tying the contest before West Virginia Wesleyan used a late surge to complete the sweep.
After Wesleyan opened the scoring in the second inning, the Senators answered immediately when Alyssa Haynes delivered an RBI single to score Audrey Higgins and knot the game at 1-1.
West Virginia Wesleyan responded with a steady offensive push, scoring in the third and fourth innings before breaking the game open with a six-run sixth. Gracey Arnold and Emma Putman led the Bobcats' offense with multiple extra-base hits and key RBI contributions.
The Senators' pitching staff worked through multiple arms in game two. Sammie Jarvis got the start and went five innings, striking out six. Andrea Pannell entered in relief before Kendal Tellings finished the game in the circle.
Davis & Elkins finished with eight hits in the nightcap, including multi-hit performances from Ashlyn Zapach and Madison Smith, while Haynes recorded the team's lone RBI.
The Senators return to action Saturday, April 25, traveling to West Virginia State for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader in Institute, W. Va. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., with game two set for 2 p.m.
