ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins men's tennis team made program history on Senior Day, defeating No. 38 West Virginia Wesleyan, 4-3, on Tuesday for its first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent.
Prior to the match, the Senators honored four seniors — Filippo Buffo, Santiago Ordonez, Justus Petersilie and Varshith Reddy Mareddy — for their contributions to the program.
Davis & Elkins dropped the doubles point but responded with a strong showing in singles play, winning four of six matches to secure the historic victory over the Bobcats.
In doubles action, Simon Kiekbeld and Buffo earned the Senators' lone win at No. 3 doubles, taking a 7-6 victory with a 7-4 tiebreak. West Virginia Wesleyan claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
The Senators surged in singles play, highlighted by straight-set wins from Philipp Fedorczuk at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1) and Christo Wirahadipoernomo at No. 3. Wirahadipoernomo battled through a tight second set, winning in a tiebreak, 8-6, to secure a 6-4, 7-6 victory.
Tom Strohschein added a key three-set win at No. 4 (6-2, 3-6, 6-3), while Buffo contributed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 5.
West Virginia Wesleyan picked up singles wins at No. 2 and No. 6, but the Senators' depth proved enough to earn the 4-3 decision.
Davis & Elkins returns to action April 24 with a road match against No. 29 Fairmont State in Fairmont, West Virginia.
