Hilltoppers Take Two from Senators at Joni Smith Field

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball dropped both games of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader to West Liberty on Saturday at Joni Smith Field, falling 12-2 in game one and 13-5 in game two.

Game One: West Liberty 12, Davis & Elkins 2

West Liberty used a dominant second inning and took advantage of miscues to secure a five-inning run-rule victory in the opener.

After plating an unearned run in the first, the Hilltoppers broke the game open with a seven-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Isabella McKee and multiple extra-base hits that stretched the lead to 8-0.

Davis & Elkins responded in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back RBI singles from Jazmin Orr and Madison Smith, cutting the deficit to 8-2. However, the Senators were unable to generate further offense.

West Liberty added four more runs in the fifth inning, including McKee's second home run of the game, to put the game away.

The Senators were limited to five hits, with Alyssa Haynes, Maisie McDaniel, Maybe Ledesma, Orr and Smith each recording one. Orr and Smith drove in the team's only runs.

Isabelle Thomas took the loss in the circle, allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits while striking out two.

Game Two: West Liberty 13, Davis & Elkins 5

Davis & Elkins showed resilience in game two, rallying from an early deficit, but West Liberty's explosive fifth inning proved to be the difference.

The Hilltoppers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and extended it to 4-0 in the third before the Senators answered with a five-run frame.

Lorena Ruiz-Rubio sparked the rally with a two-run home run, and the Senators capitalized on walks and a defensive error to take a 5-4 lead. Maybe Ledesma and Sammie Jarvis each drew bases-loaded walks, while Madison Smith reached on an error that brought in a run.

West Liberty quickly responded in the fourth inning with a two-run double from Sara Simon to regain the lead at 6-5.

In the fifth, the Hilltoppers erupted for seven runs on five hits and several walks to pull away and secure the sweep.

Ruiz-Rubio led the Senators offensively with two hits and two RBIs, while Gweny Wessling, Christina Montgomery and Audrey Higgins each added a hit.

Sammie Jarvis was charged with the loss, tossing five innings and allowing 13 runs on 11 hits with eight strikeouts.

Davis & Elkins returns to action Wednesday, April 22, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Joni Smith Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with game two to follow at 3 p.m.
