ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins softball team delivered a Mountain East Conference doubleheader sweep over Wheeling on Friday at Joni Smith Field, powering its way to a 9-7 win in game one before sealing the sweep with a 6-5 walk-off victory in game two.

Game One: Davis & Elkins 9, Wheeling 7

Davis & Elkins (13-28) rode a combination of timely hitting and power at the plate to outlast Wheeling in a high-scoring opener.

The Senators answered immediately after surrendering a first-inning run, as Audrey Higgins ripped an RBI double to right center before Alyssa Haynes followed with an RBI single to give D&E a 2-1 lead.

After Wheeling tied the game in the third, Sammie Jarvis sparked the Senators again in the fourth, launching a two-run home run to reclaim a 4-2 advantage.

Wheeling responded with a two-run fifth inning to even the score, but Davis & Elkins delivered its biggest offensive surge in the bottom half. Higgins led off with a solo home run, and Christina Montgomery followed later in the inning with a two-run blast to put the Senators back in front, 7-4.

The momentum stayed firmly with D&E in the sixth inning, as Trinity Fleming lined a two-run single to right field, extending the lead to 9-4.

Wheeling mounted a late push with three runs in the seventh, but Jarvis remained composed in the circle to finish off the complete-game victory.

Jarvis earned the win, tossing all seven innings with 10 strikeouts while allowing just four earned runs. She also led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Higgins turned in a standout performance, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a double, a home run and two RBIs. Montgomery added a two-run homer, while Haynes and Madison Smith each recorded multi-hit games in the 12-hit effort.

Game Two: Davis & Elkins 6, Wheeling 5

Davis & Elkins (14-28) completed the sweep in dramatic fashion, erasing an early deficit before walking it off in the seventh inning.

Wheeling struck for four runs across the first two innings and built a 5-2 lead through three, putting the Senators on their heels early.

D&E answered steadily, beginning in the second inning when Madison Smith doubled to drive in a run. The Senators continued to chip away in the fourth, as Christina Montgomery launched her second home run of the day — a two-run shot — to cut the deficit to 5-4.

From there, Jarvis took control in the circle, holding Wheeling scoreless over the final four innings and allowing just four hits in the complete-game effort.

The Senators saved their best for last in the seventh. After a leadoff baserunner reached, Ashlyn Zapach delivered the defining moment of the day, jumping on the first pitch and driving a two-run walk-off home run to right-center field to secure the 6-5 victory and the sweep.

Jarvis earned her second win of the day, going the distance while allowing five runs, four earned. Montgomery paced the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Zapach drove in three runs on her game-winning homer. Smith added two hits and an RBI, and Higgins scored twice in the win.

Davis & Elkins returns to action Saturday, April 18, hosting West Liberty University in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Joni Smith Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two set for 3 p.m.
