ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins women's tennis was edged 4-3 by California (Pa.) on Sunday in nonconference action at the Thomas Tennis Center in Elkins, West Virginia.
The Senators opened strong by claiming the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. The duo of Lilly Wentzler and Fabienne Lahn earned a 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Maddie Frazier and Emiliana Golac followed with a 6-4 win at No. 3. Liebe Oosthuizen and Erin Laubscher battled at No. 1 doubles but fell in a close 7-5 decision.
In singles play, Davis & Elkins picked up two wins but came up just short. Lahn secured a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-4. Golac added the Senators' final point at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
California (Pa.) answered with wins across the remaining courts to secure the team victory. At No. 1 singles, Oosthuizen fell 6-3, 6-4, while Wentzler dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision at No. 2. Laubscher pushed her match to three sets at No. 4 before falling 2-6, 6-0, 7-5. Frazier rounded out the lineup at No. 6, falling 6-1, 6-1.
Davis & Elkins will return to action on Wednesday, April 15, traveling to Frostburg State for a 2:00 p.m. match.
