D&E Earns Split Against West Virginia State at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins softball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against West Virginia State on Saturday at Joni Smith Field, taking game one 3-2 before falling 7-6 in game two.

Game One: Davis & Elkins 3, West Virginia State 2

Davis & Elkins used timely power and a dominant performance in the circle from Sammie Jarvis to secure a walk-off victory in the opener.

The Senators struck first in the second inning when Ashlyn Zapach launched a solo home run to give D&E a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Jarvis helped her own cause with an RBI single to center, scoring Christina Montgomery and extending the advantage to 2-0.

Jarvis kept West Virginia State off the scoreboard through six innings, allowing just three hits during that stretch. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the seventh, as Avery Contreras delivered a two-RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

Davis & Elkins responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning. Jarvis again came through in the clutch, blasting a walk-off solo home run to lift the Senators to a 3-2 win.

Jarvis earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game with 10 strikeouts while allowing just five hits and two runs. At the plate, she finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and the game-winning home run. Zapach added two hits and an RBI, while Montgomery recorded a pair of hits and scored a run.

Game Two: West Virginia State 7, Davis & Elkins 6

The Senators battled back late but came up just short as West Virginia State earned a split with a 7-6 victory in game two.

West Virginia State opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Clarke Moore. Davis & Elkins answered in the second, as Audrey Higgins tied the game with a solo home run before Trinity Fleming gave the Senators a 2-1 lead with an RBI double.

The Yellow Jackets broke the game open in the fourth inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues to score four runs and take a 5-2 lead. They added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and extended the margin to 7-2 in the sixth on a solo home run by Emily Bechtel.

Davis & Elkins chipped away in the sixth, scoring on an error to make it 7-3, before mounting a late rally in the seventh. Zapach delivered a three-run home run to bring the Senators within one, but the comeback fell just short.

Higgins led the Senators with two hits, including a home run, while Zapach drove in three runs. Fleming added two hits and an RBI, and Alyssa Haynes scored twice in the contest.

Jarvis took the loss despite pitching a complete game, allowing seven runs (three earned) on 12 hits while striking out five.

Davis & Elkins returns to action on Saturday, April 18, hosting West Liberty University for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Joni Smith Field. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m., with game two set for 2:00 p.m.
