Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins softball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against the University of Charleston on Saturday at Joni Smith Field, falling 8-1 in game one before bouncing back with a 3-1 victory in game two.
Game One: Charleston 8, Davis & Elkins 1
Charleston used an early offensive surge and a dominant pitching performance to take game one, 8-1.
The Golden Eagles struck first in the opening inning, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly by Danielle Pici and an RBI groundout from Maddie Entler to take a 2-0 lead.
Charleston extended its advantage in the third inning when Entler launched a three-run home run, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Davis & Elkins was limited offensively throughout the game but broke through in the sixth inning. Alyssa Haynes came around to score after Trinity Fleming reached on an outfield error, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
Charleston added insurance in the seventh inning with three more runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Taylor Hodson to secure the 8-1 win.
Gweny Wessling led the Senators at the plate with two hits, while Haynes, Audrey Higgins and Cortney Dobbs each added a hit.
Saylor Kneeland took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits over seven innings.
Game Two: Davis & Elkins 3, Charleston 1
Davis & Elkins responded in game two behind strong pitching and timely hitting to earn the split.
Charleston opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Taylor Hodson to take a 1-0 lead.
The Senators answered in the fifth inning when Cortney Dobbs scored on a sacrifice by Gweny Wessling to tie the game at 1-1.
Davis & Elkins took control in the sixth inning. Audrey Higgins delivered an RBI single and advanced on an error that allowed Christina Montgomery to score the go-ahead run. Alyssa Haynes followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-1.
Sammie Jarvis was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing just one run on five hits while striking out nine to earn the win.
Haynes, Higgins, Lorena Ruiz-Rubio and Ashlyn Zapach each recorded a hit in the victory.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Sunday, April 12, hosting West Virginia State University for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., with game two set for 2 p.m. at Joni Smith Field.
