Box Score Winter Haven, Fla. — The Davis & Elkins baseball team jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off a late surge from Malone, falling 13-3 Saturday morning at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
The Senators struck first in the opening inning, scoring three runs to take an early advantage. Kenny Capria opened the rally with a double and later scored when Carsan Strolla delivered an RBI single to even the score at 1-1.
Davis & Elkins continued the inning when Joel Wise lined a two-run double to left field, bringing home Strolla and Zach Calef-Boring to give the Senators a 3-1 lead.
Malone responded in the third inning, tying the game at 3-3 on a two-run single by Reilly Tyna. The Pioneers took the lead for good in the sixth inning with a pair of RBI hits before adding a run in the seventh to extend the advantage.
The game broke open in the eighth inning as Malone plated seven runs on six hits and took advantage of a pair of Davis & Elkins errors to pull away.
Capria, Calef-Boring, Grant Mealey, Strolla and Wise each recorded a hit for the Senators, while Wise finished with a team-high two RBIs.
Diego Reyes took the loss for Davis & Elkins after allowing five runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings while striking out three.
Malone finished with 17 hits in the contest, led by Robert Gumino, who went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
Davis & Elkins will return to action March 14 when the Senators travel to Salem University for a doubleheader in Nutter Fort, West Virginia.
