Senator Softball Drops Pair at Space Coast Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Davis & Elkins College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader Tuesday at the Space Coast Spring Games at the Space Coast Complex Blue Rawlings field. The Senators fell 7-1 to Southern New Hampshire in game one before dropping a 5-2 decision to Holy Family in game two.

Game One: Southern New Hampshire 7, Davis & Elkins 1

Southern New Hampshire struck early and never looked back, scoring three runs in the first inning to take control on the way to a 7-1 victory over Davis & Elkins.

The Penmen capitalized on passed balls and a bases-loaded walk to plate their first two runs before adding a sacrifice fly later in the inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead.

Davis & Elkins responded in the bottom of the first when Ashlyn Zapach singled to left field to drive in Alyssa Haynes, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Southern New Hampshire extended the lead with an unearned run in the third before adding three more in the seventh to seal the win.

Zapach led the Senators offensively with a 2-for-3 performance and the team's lone RBI. Sammie Jarvis recorded a hit in the circle and took the loss after tossing 6.2 innings with one strikeout. Kendal Tellings entered in relief to record the final out.

Charlotte Donovan earned the win for Southern New Hampshire, allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven across seven innings.

Game Two: Holy Family 5, Davis & Elkins 2

Holy Family built a steady lead and held off a late push from the Senators to claim a 5-2 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Tigers scored in the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly and added runs in the third and fourth to extend the lead to 3-0.

Davis & Elkins broke through in the fifth when Audrey Higgins doubled to score Trinity Fleming and trim the deficit to 3-1.

Holy Family answered with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to push the advantage to 5-1.

The Senators added a final run in the seventh inning when Ashlyn Zapach doubled to bring home Kaitlyn England, but the rally came up short.

Fleming led Davis & Elkins at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance and a run scored, while Higgins and Zapach each delivered RBI doubles.

Saylor Kneeland started in the circle for the Senators, allowing five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Tellings again provided relief, recording the final out.
