WHEELING, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse fell 14-9 to Wheeling on Thursday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Bishop Schmitt Field.
The Senators drop to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in MEC play, while Wheeling improves to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in conference games.
Savannah Quave led Davis & Elkins offensively with three goals and added two caused turnovers. Talia Berardo finished with two goals and an assist, while Izzie Sevila recorded a goal and two assists. Alexia Gonzales and Rylee Anderson each added a goal and an assist for the Senators, with Anderson also recording two caused turnovers.
Zoe Mackey contributed defensively with two caused turnovers and controlled five draws for Davis & Elkins.
Wheeling was paced by Trinity Rose with four goals and an assist. Sophia Cirone added three goals and three assists, while Jovie Noack finished with three goals and an assist.
Wheeling jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter before the Senators responded with back-to-back goals from Sevila and Quave to cut the deficit to 3-2. After the teams traded goals late in the period, Wheeling held a 5-3 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, the Cardinals extended their advantage, but Davis & Elkins continued to respond. Ke'ya Stevens scored on a man-up opportunity and Gonzales added another extra-player goal to keep the Senators within reach. Berardo closed the half with a goal to trim the deficit to 8-6 at the break.
Davis & Elkins continued its push in the third quarter when Quave scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Mackey to pull the Senators within one at 8-7. Wheeling answered with two goals of its own late in the quarter to carry a 10-7 lead into the final period.
Berardo opened the fourth-quarter scoring for the Senators with a man-down goal to cut the deficit to 11-8, and Quave later added another man-up goal off a feed from Sevila to bring the score to 12-9. Wheeling closed the game with two late goals to secure the 14-9 victory.
Davis & Elkins finished with a 31-30 edge in total shots and matched Wheeling with 13 draw controls.
In goal, Megan Bauer made seven saves for Davis & Elkins, while Daelyn Hardnack recorded one save in relief.
The Senators return home Sunday for Senior Day when they host Point Park at 2:00 p.m. at Nuttall Field.
