Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, winning game one 9-1 before outlasting the Bobcats 15-10 in a high-scoring game two.
Game One: Davis & Elkins 9, West Virginia Wesleyan 1
The Senators used a big second inning and strong pitching from Sammie Jarvis to cruise to a 9-1 victory in the opening game.
Davis & Elkins broke the game open in the second inning with two home runs. Audrey Higgins got the Senators on the board with a two-run homer, and Lorena Ruiz-Rubio followed later in the inning with a three-run shot to push the lead to 5-0.
The Senators added three more runs in the fourth. Gweny Wessling delivered an RBI single that scored Madison Smith, while Ashlyn Zapach and Jarvis each drove in runs with groundouts to extend the lead to 8-0.
West Virginia Wesleyan scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Ella Fournier.
Davis & Elkins answered in the fifth when Smith doubled home April Belcher to make it 9-1.
Jarvis earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game. She allowed one run on six hits while striking out four.
The Senators finished with 13 hits in the opener. April Belcher and Trinity Fleming each collected two hits, while Smith went 2-for-2 with a double and RBI. Higgins and Ruiz-Rubio each homered and combined for five RBIs.
Game Two: Davis & Elkins 15, West Virginia Wesleyan 10
Davis & Elkins built an early lead, survived a nine-run inning from West Virginia Wesleyan, and pulled away late to complete the sweep with a 15-10 win in game two.
The Senators struck first in the opening inning when Jarvis blasted a three-run home run to give Davis & Elkins a 3-0 lead.
D&E added four more runs in the second. Trinity Fleming drove in a run after reaching on an error, Zapach doubled home another, and Jarvis delivered her second home run of the game to extend the lead to 7-0.
West Virginia Wesleyan responded with a nine-run second inning to take a 9-7 lead.
The Senators answered immediately in the third. Maisie McDaniel drove in a run with a groundout before Belcher added an RBI single and Fleming lifted a sacrifice fly to put Davis & Elkins back in front 10-9.
Davis & Elkins added an insurance run in the fifth when Belcher singled to score Alyssa Haynes.
The Senators sealed the win with a four-run seventh inning. Zapach drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Ruiz-Rubio added a sacrifice fly, and Higgins capped the rally with a two-run homer to make it 15-9.
Belcher led the offense with a 4-for-4 performance and two RBIs. Jarvis drove in five runs and homered twice, while Higgins added a home run and two RBIs. Fleming scored three runs and drove in two.
Kendal Tellings earned the win for the Senators, while Saylor Kneeland tossed six innings in relief, allowing four runs and striking out one.
Davis & Elkins totaled 14 hits in the game.
The Senators will return to action Saturday, March 28, when they travel to Athens, West Virginia, for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Concord University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two set for 3 p.m.
