Box Score ELKINS, W. Va. — Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse fell to Frostburg State 13-8 in its Mountain East Conference opener Sunday afternoon at Nuttall Field.
The Senators (6-2, 0-1 MEC) jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first two goals of the game and taking a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Frostburg State (6-2, 1-0 MEC) responded with a strong second quarter, outscoring Davis & Elkins 6-2 to take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Davis & Elkins struck first when Morgan Rogers opened the scoring at the 10:23 mark of the first quarter off an assist from Izzie Sevila. Just seconds later, Malia Galan extended the lead to 2-0 after finishing a feed from Mackenzie Mullan.
Frostburg State answered with back-to-back goals to tie the game, but Galan scored her second goal of the quarter with 59 seconds remaining to give the Senators a 3-2 lead after the opening period.
Rylee Anderson pushed the lead to 4-2 early in the second quarter, but the Bobcats responded with six goals over the remainder of the period to take control of the game. Anderson added another goal late in the quarter, but Frostburg still carried an 8-5 advantage into the break.
Savannah Quave opened the second half scoring for Davis & Elkins to cut the deficit to 8-6, but Frostburg answered with two man-up goals and three total scores in the third quarter to stretch the lead to 11-7 heading into the final frame.
Ke'ya Stevens found the net late in the third quarter for the Senators, and Sevila added a free-position goal early in the fourth, but Frostburg maintained control down the stretch to secure the 13-8 victory.
Galan and Anderson each led Davis & Elkins with two goals apiece. Sevila recorded a goal and an assist, while Quave, Rogers, and Stevens each added a goal.
Defensively, the Senators were led by Alexia Gonzales with five ground balls and four draw controls. Mackenzie Mullan added four ground balls and four draw controls, while Zoe Mackey contributed two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Stevens and Anderson each collected three ground balls.
Goalkeeper Megan Bauer played all 60 minutes in net for the Senators, finishing with 13 saves while adding two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Senators held advantages in ground balls (26-13) and draw controls (14-8), but Frostburg State generated 36 shots compared to 13 for Davis & Elkins.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Thursday, March 26, when the Senators travel to Wheeling University for a Mountain East Conference matchup. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
