Cardinals Take Two from Senators in MEC Play

ELKINS, W.Va. — Wheeling University swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from Davis & Elkins Sunday afternoon at Harpertown Field, taking game one 12-3 before securing a 7-2 win in game two.

Game One: Wheeling 12, Davis & Elkins 3
Wheeling jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the opener, scoring five runs in the first inning to take control.

The Cardinals used four hits and three hit batters in the frame to build the advantage, highlighted by a two-run single from Gavin Millians and RBI hits from Chris Alvarez and Jalen Raysor to make it 5-0.

Davis & Elkins responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when Zach Calef-Boring grounded out to shortstop to bring home Kenny Capria and cut the deficit to 5-1.

Wheeling added four more runs in the third inning, including a three-run single from Brett Johnson that extended the lead to 9-1.

The Senators chipped away with a run in the fourth as Calef-Boring crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Wheeling answered with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to push the lead to 12-2.

D&E plated its final run in the bottom of the sixth when Grant Mealey singled to left field to score Calef-Boring and make it 12-3.

Calef-Boring scored twice and drove in a run for the Senators, while Mealey added an RBI single. Capria finished with a hit, including a triple, and scored a run, while Dylan Leadbetter also recorded a hit.

Kenny Capria took the loss after starting on the mound for Davis & Elkins. Joel Wise provided 3.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts, while Charley Plummer, Bryce Hines and Jack Murphy also appeared out of the bullpen.

Game Two: Wheeling 7, Davis & Elkins 2
Wheeling used a steady offensive effort and drew nine walks to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second inning when Kale Wilkins stole second base and Keaton Ference came around to score to give Wheeling a 1-0 lead.

Davis & Elkins answered in the bottom half of the inning as Joel Wise delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Grant Mealey to score and tie the game at 1-1.

Wheeling regained the lead in the third inning when Nicholas Schulz singled to center field to score Edward Mateo. A bases-loaded walk later in the inning extended the Cardinals' advantage to 3-1.

The Cardinals added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run single from Gavin Millians and pushed the lead to 7-1 in the sixth when Keaton Ference delivered a two-run single.

The Senators added a final run in the seventh inning when Mason Brenneman drew a bases-loaded walk that allowed Ethan Wyatt to score.

Brenneman led the Senators at the plate with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Carsan Strolla, Kenny Capria and Connor Hyde each recorded a hit for D&E.

Kyle Ball was charged with the loss for the Senators after starting on the mound. Jeston Showalter tossed 2.2 innings in relief, while Collin Schneider, Dallas Rasmussen and Jack Murphy also appeared on the mound.

Davis & Elkins returns to action Tuesday, March 24, when the Senators travel to Beckley, W. Va. for a non-conference doubleheader against West Virginia University Institute of Technology. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two set for 3:30 p.m.
