CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to the University of Charleston in Mountain East Conference play Saturday.
Charleston claimed the doubles point after sweeping all three matches to take an early 1-0 lead.
At No. 1 doubles, Davis & Elkins' Justus Petersilie and Philipp Fedorczuk fell 7-5 to Garcia and Pinto. The Golden Eagles added another win at No. 2 doubles as Christo Wirahadipoernomo and Tom Strohschein were defeated 6-4 by Lagger and Marobela.
Charleston secured the doubles sweep at No. 3 with Pottbecker and Nordio defeating Simon Kiekbeld and Filippo Buffo 7-5.
The Senators responded in singles play with victories at the top two positions.
At No. 1 singles, Fedorczuk rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Garcia 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Petersilie followed with a straight-set win at No. 2 singles, topping Lagger 6-3, 7-6.
Charleston secured the team victory with wins across the remaining singles matches. Pottbecker defeated Wirahadipoernomo 7-6, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Nordio topped Strohschein 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4.
At No. 5 singles, Pinto edged Buffo in three sets 6-0, 2-6, 7-6. The final match at No. 6 singles was decided in a match tiebreak, with Charleston's Kayser defeating Santiago Ordonez 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Wednesday, March 25, when the Senators travel to face West Virginia State at 12 p.m. in Institute, West Virginia.
