Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball dropped both games of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against Frostburg State on Saturday in Morgantown, falling 6-3 in game one and 4-3 in game two.
Game One
Frostburg State used a four-run third inning to take control and held off Davis & Elkins for a 6-3 victory in the opening game.
The Senators struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Christina Montgomery scored on a fielder's choice by Trinity Fleming to give Davis & Elkins an early 1-0 lead.
Frostburg State answered in the third, plating four runs on a string of extra-base hits. Arden Miller delivered an RBI single before Izabella Donaldson and Ally Myers each added RBI doubles to push the Bobcats ahead 4-1.
The Bobcats added two more runs in the fourth on a two-run single from Brianna Russo, extending the lead to 6-1.
Davis & Elkins attempted a comeback in the fifth inning. April Belcher launched a solo home run to left field before Ashlyn Zapach followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-3, but the Senators were unable to score again.
Zapach led Davis & Elkins at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Belcher finished 1-for-3 with the home run and an RBI, while Montgomery and Madison Smith each scored a run.
Sammie Jarvis took the loss in the circle for the Senators after allowing six runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings. Alyssia Munoz provided relief, allowing just one hit over the final 3.1 innings.
Game Two
Davis & Elkins jumped out to an early lead, but Frostburg State rallied late to secure a 4-3 win and complete the sweep.
Frostburg State opened the scoring in the third inning on an RBI double by Kylee Piconi, but the Senators responded with a three-run bottom half.
Madison Smith tied the game with a solo home run to left field before Christina Montgomery delivered an RBI double to score Gweny Wessling. Ashlyn Zapach followed with an RBI single to give Davis & Elkins a 3-1 advantage.
The Bobcats chipped away in the fourth when Izabella Donaldson hit a solo home run to make it 3-2.
Frostburg State tied the game in the sixth after a passed ball allowed Sage Haller to score, and the Bobcats took the lead in the seventh on a sacrifice RBI by Brianna Russo.
Davis & Elkins finished with eight hits in the game. Wessling led the Senators with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Zapach went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Smith added the solo home run and Montgomery recorded a double and an RBI.
Alyssia Munoz was charged with the loss after starting in the circle for the Senators. Saylor Kneeland and Kendal Tellings also saw time in relief.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Wednesday, March 25, with a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon.
