MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins softball opened Mountain East Conference play Saturday with a pair of losses to Fairmont State, falling 12-4 in the opener and 5-4 in the nightcap at Mylan Park. The games were originally scheduled to be played in Elkins but were moved due to field conditions.

Game One: Fairmont State 12, Davis & Elkins 4
Fairmont State used a fast start and a big day at the plate from Paul to take control early in the MEC opener.

The Falcons plated four runs in the opening inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Paul, and added three more runs in the second to build a 7-1 advantage.

Davis & Elkins responded in the bottom of the second inning with three runs to cut the deficit to 7-4. Christina Montgomery delivered an RBI single, while Audrey Higgins added a two-run single to bring the Senators within striking distance.

Fairmont State answered immediately, scoring three runs in the third inning and adding single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pull away.

In the circle, Saylor Kneeland got the start, allowing four runs in the first inning. Kendal Tellings worked the final 5.2 innings in relief, striking out two.

Gweny Wessling led the Senators offensively, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Higgins drove in two runs, while Montgomery also added an RBI.

Game Two: Fairmont State 5, Davis & Elkins 4
The Senators battled in game two but came up just short in a one-run loss to close the conference-opening doubleheader.

Fairmont State opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before Sammie Jarvis answered in the second with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.

The Falcons took advantage of defensive miscues in the third inning, scoring four runs — three unearned — to take a 5-1 lead.

Davis & Elkins chipped away at the deficit, scoring twice in the fourth inning on RBI hits from April Belcher and Lorena Ruiz-Rubio. Ruiz-Rubio added another RBI single in the sixth to bring the Senators within one at 5-4.

Jarvis went the distance in the circle for Davis & Elkins, tossing all seven innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven.

She also led the offense, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI. Belcher added two hits and an RBI, while Ruiz-Rubio finished with two hits and two RBIs.
