Senators Split MEC Opening Doubleheader vs. Point Park

ELKINS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins College baseball team opened Mountain East Conference play Sunday with a doubleheader split against Point Park at Shilling Field at Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Senators took game one, 2-1, before falling 12-3 in game two.

With the split, Davis & Elkins moves to 3-14 overall and 1-1 in MEC play.

Game One: Davis & Elkins 2, Point Park 1

Davis & Elkins used late home runs and a complete-game performance from Cooper Blackburn to secure a 2-1 victory in the opener.

Point Park struck first in the fourth inning when Trevor Jones hit a solo home run to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

The Senators answered in the sixth inning as Carsan Strolla tied the game with a solo home run to center field. Davis & Elkins took the lead in the seventh when Grant Mealey delivered a solo shot down the left-field line to make it 2-1.

Blackburn handled the rest from the mound, tossing a complete game while allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk across seven innings to earn his first win of the season.

The Senators finished with five hits in the contest. Mason Brenneman led the offense with two hits, while Kenny Capria added a double.

Game Two: Point Park 12, Davis & Elkins 3

Point Park responded in game two, using a big second and third inning to pull away for a 12-3 victory.

The Pioneers scored in the first inning before the Senators took a brief lead in the second. Dylan Leadbetter highlighted the inning with a two-run home run to left field that scored Joel Wise and gave Davis & Elkins a 2-1 advantage.

Point Park answered immediately with four runs in the bottom of the second and added four more in the third inning to take control of the game. Sebastian Hernandez hit a three-run homer in the third as part of the surge.

The Senators added their final run in the sixth inning when Leadbetter doubled to left center, driving in Carsan Strolla.

Leadbetter paced the Davis & Elkins offense with two hits and three RBIs. Zach Calef-Boring also collected two hits, while Capria, Brenneman, Mealey and Strolla each recorded a hit.

Davis & Elkins returns home Saturday, March 21 for a Mountain East Conference doubleheader against West Liberty. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Harpertown Field in Elkins, West Virginia.
