Box Score ELKINS, W. Va. — Wheeling University used a strong second half to defeat Davis & Elkins, 83-74, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the McDonnell Center.
The Senators led 40-34 at halftime after shooting 58.6 percent from the field in the opening half and building a lead that reached as many as 15 points. Davis & Elkins controlled the paint early and went into the break with momentum.
Wheeling responded after intermission, outscoring D&E 49-34 in the second half. The Cardinals shot 59.3 percent from the field and connected on seven 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes to regain the lead and pull away down the stretch.
Matthew Gray led the Senators with 19 points, while Vegas Evans added 18 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Noah Adamczyk finished with 10 points, and Malachi Hampton and Nnadozie Okoroji chipped in eight points apiece.
Davis & Elkins shot 55.2 percent from the floor but struggled at the free-throw line, converting five of 16 attempts.
Ayden Goll paced Wheeling with 24 points, followed by Caleb Murray with 18 and Tee Harris with 16.
The Senators return to the road on Wednesday, Feb. 11, traveling to Glenville State University for a 7:30 p.m. MEC matchup in Glenville, W. Va.
