Senators Rally to Force OT in Loss to Hilltoppers

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. — Davis & Elkins women's basketball dropped a hard-fought 66-61 overtime decision to West Liberty on Wednesday evening in Mountain East Conference action at the ASRC.

The Senators battled through four quarters and forced overtime after tying the game at 55 late in regulation, but the Hilltoppers pulled away at the free-throw line in the extra period to secure the win.

Jahniya Marion and Kylie Morris led Davis & Elkins with 23 points apiece. Marion added eight rebounds, three steals and played all 45 minutes, while Morris recorded a double-double with 23 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Senators held the advantage in the paint, scoring 44 points inside, and shot 62.5 percent in the third quarter to climb back into the contest after trailing at halftime. Davis & Elkins outscored West Liberty 22-20 in the third period and stayed within striking distance throughout the second half.

After falling behind 51-45 late in the third quarter, the Senators rallied in the fourth, holding West Liberty to just four points in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Madison Mims hit two free throws with 46 seconds remaining to pull D&E within two, and Marion converted a layup in the final seconds to tie the game and force overtime.

In the extra session, West Liberty used a late surge at the foul line to pull ahead. The Hilltoppers went 4-for-5 from the stripe in the final seconds to seal the five-point victory.

Kaitlyn Parker added five points and three rebounds for the Senators, while Koi Shabazz contributed four points and four rebounds. Davis & Elkins finished the game shooting 36.6 percent from the field and outrebounded West Liberty 39-48.

Reagan Vinskovich led West Liberty with 18 points and 20 rebounds, while Olivia Baker added 15 points, including four three-pointers.

Davis & Elkins will return home on Saturday, Feb. 7, to host Wheeling University in MEC action. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the McDonnell Center in Elkins.
