Box Score 3 RALEIGH, N.C. — The Davis & Elkins College Athletics softball team split a three-game slate Saturday at the Triangle Classic, falling to Carson-Newman University and University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown before closing the day with a run-rule victory over Bluefield State University.
Game One: Carson-Newman 11, Davis & Elkins 4
The Senators carried a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning before Carson-Newman erupted for 10 runs to take the opener.
After trailing 1-0, Davis & Elkins broke through in the fourth. Sammie Jarvis doubled to left field to score two runs, and Madison Smith added a sacrifice fly to give the Senators a 3-1 advantage. Trinity Fleming later scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-1.
Carson-Newman responded with 10 runs on five hits and six walks in the seventh inning to complete the comeback.
Jarvis finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs at the plate while also taking the loss in the circle, allowing six earned runs over six innings with two strikeouts. Alyssia Munoz worked one inning in relief. Lorena Ruiz-Rubio was hit by a pitch twice, and Davis & Elkins drew seven walks in the contest.
Game Two: Pitt-Johnstown 9, Davis & Elkins 1
Pitt-Johnstown used three home runs and capitalized on five Davis & Elkins errors to secure the second game.
The Mountain Cats jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning on a three-run home run. The Senators plated their lone run in the second when April Belcher reached on an error that allowed Trinity Fleming to score.
Pitt-Johnstown added single runs in the fourth and sixth and a three-run fifth inning highlighted by two home runs to pull away.
Lorena Ruiz-Rubio recorded the Senators' lone hit. Saylor Kneeland took the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) over 4 2/3 innings. Kendal Tellings tossed the final inning in relief.
Game Three: Davis & Elkins 10, Bluefield State 1 (5 innings)
The Senators responded in the finale with a dominant performance, scoring 10 runs on seven hits to earn a run-rule victory.
Fleming put Davis & Elkins on the board with a solo home run in the first inning. The Senators added another run in the second before breaking the game open with six runs in the third. Audrey Higgins and Jarvis each delivered RBI doubles in the inning, and the Senators capitalized on walks and passed balls to extend the lead to 7-1.
Ashlyn Zapach capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the fourth.
Jarvis earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete-game five-inning no-hitter while allowing one unearned run and striking out five.
Fleming finished 2-for-3 with a home run, and Zapach drove in two runs. Higgins, Jarvis and Isabelle Thomas each scored multiple runs as Davis & Elkins closed the day on a high note.
