Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins College fell to University of Charleston, 82-52, on Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at H. Bernard Wehrle Arena.
The Senators led by as many as 10 points in the opening quarter and were tied at 15-15 after one period before Charleston used a strong second quarter to take control.
Davis & Elkins opened the game on a 10-2 run, highlighted by a fast-break layup from Jahniya Marion and a three-pointer from Kylie Morris. The Senators extended their lead to 12-2 midway through the first quarter before Charleston closed the frame on a 13-3 run, capped by a tip-in at the buzzer to even the score.
Charleston surged ahead in the second quarter, shooting 64.3 percent from the field in the period and knocking down five three-pointers. A late three-pointer pushed the Golden Eagles' advantage to 38-26 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles continued their momentum in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 21 points midway through the frame. Davis & Elkins answered with a brief 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 56-39 entering the fourth, but Charleston shot 64.3 percent again in the final quarter to seal the victory.
Morris led the Senators with 11 points, adding a pair of three-pointers. Marion and Kaitlyn Parker each finished with eight points, while Jalia Garner added eight points off the bench. The Senators received 23 bench points in the contest.
Davis & Elkins shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field and 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three-point range. Charleston shot 53.6 percent (30-of-56) overall and 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from beyond the arc, outrebounding the Senators 43-26.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. when the Senators travel to face Frostburg State University in Mountain East Conference play.
