Box Score ELKINS, W.Va. — Davis & Elkins College used a seven-goal third quarter and late man-up opportunities to secure a 14-12 victory over Tiffin University on Saturday afternoon at Nuttall Field.
With the win, the Senators improve to 3-0 overall, while the Dragons fall to 1-2.
After leading 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, Davis & Elkins trailed 7-5 at halftime following a high-scoring second period that featured multiple player-up goals by Tiffin. The Senators responded with their strongest stretch of the afternoon in the third quarter, outscoring the Dragons 7-3 to take a 12-10 lead into the final frame.
Rylee Anderson scored twice during the third-quarter surge, while Savannah Quave added a free-position goal to tie the game at 10-10. Izzie Sevila and Talia Berardo followed with back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of the quarter to give D&E its first lead since early in the second.
Tiffin battled back to even the score at 12-12 with 8:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Senators capitalized on consecutive yellow cards to regain control. Malia Galan converted a man-up opportunity with 4:53 to play off an assist from Berardo, and Berardo added an insurance goal on a free-position attempt less than a minute later to seal the 14-12 decision.
Quave led the Senators with four goals, while Anderson added three goals and four caused turnovers in a strong two-way performance. Sevila and Berardo each scored twice, with Berardo finishing with a game-high four assists for six total points. Galan, Ke'ya Stevens and Alexia Gonzales each found the back of the net once.
Davis & Elkins outshot Tiffin 34-26 and held a 31-16 advantage in ground balls. The Senators also controlled 14 draw controls, including key possessions during the decisive third-quarter run.
Defensively, Zoe Mackey totaled six ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with an assist, while Berardo added five ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, Megan Bauer made seven saves in 54 minutes of action, and Daelyn Hardnack stopped one shot in relief.
Tiffin was led by Kenna Wigginton's four goals and Lauren Walsh's three goals and one assist.
Davis & Elkins returns to action during Spring Break on Tuesday, March 3, traveling to face St. Thomas University (Florida) in Miami Gardens, Florida. Opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
