D&E Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan

OWENSBORO, Ky. — The Davis & Elkins College baseball team split a doubleheader Friday at Kentucky Wesleyan, falling in the opener before earning its first win of the season in the nightcap.

Game One: Kentucky Wesleyan 11, Davis & Elkins 1

Davis & Elkins opened the day by scoring first but fell 11-1 in the series opener.

The Senators struck in the top of the first inning when Kenny Capria scored on an RBI single by Grant Mealey to give D&E a 1-0 lead.

Kentucky Wesleyan responded in the bottom half with a three-run home run to take a 3-1 advantage. The Panthers added two more runs in the third inning on a two-run homer to extend the lead to 5-1.

After five solid innings from starter Cooper Blackburn, Kentucky Wesleyan pulled away in the sixth with six runs to put the contest out of reach.

Carsan Strolla led the Senators with two hits, while Capria, Mealey and Nate Silvus each added a hit. Capria also recorded a stolen base.

Blackburn took the loss, allowing five runs over five innings, while Dallas Rasmussen and Collin Schneider finished the game in relief.

Game Two: Davis & Elkins 14, Kentucky Wesleyan 3

The Senators bounced back in the nightcap to earn their first win of the season with a 14-3 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan.

Davis & Elkins took control early, scoring two runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Tyler Mendoza and Capria to build a 2-0 lead.

After Kentucky Wesleyan cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third, the Senators responded with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Capria and Zach Calef-Boring.

D&E added four more runs in the fifth to extend the margin to 10-3.

The Senators put the game away in the seventh with back-to-back two-run home runs by Mendoza and Mealey, marking the first collegiate home runs for both players.

Capria paced the offense, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Calef-Boring also went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Mendoza finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Mealey added three RBIs.

Diego Reyes delivered a complete-game performance on the mound, pitching all seven innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out six.
