Schrieken Breaks Record Again as Senators Climb Standings on Day Two of MEC/GMAC Championships

CANTON, Ohio — The Davis & Elkins College men's and women's swimming teams continued strong performances Wednesday at the Mountain East Conference/Great Midwest Athletic Conference Swimming Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium, highlighted by another school record from Lasse Schrieken and major point totals in finals competition.

During the morning preliminaries, Julianne Hobson qualified 10th in the women's 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.67, while Lauren Lockwood placed 14th in 1:00.13. Gustavo Queiroz advanced in the men's 100-yard butterfly with a seventh-place time of 50.97.

Anikka Peterson qualified in the women's 400-yard individual medley with a time of 5:05.54.

In the men's 400-yard individual medley preliminaries, Schrieken placed third in 4:10.24, Leonardo Oshiro finished fourth in 4:11.59, Payton Williamson took fifth in 4:11.83, Tommaso Tofani placed seventh in 4:13.07, and Charlie Whitsed also advanced.

In the men's 200-yard freestyle preliminaries, Leonardo Vallerini qualified sixth, while Jan Spehar placed seventh. Both advanced to the evening finals.

In Wednesday evening finals, Hobson placed 10th in the women's 100-yard butterfly B final with a time of 58.61, earning 17 points and setting a new school record. Lockwood followed closely in 11th place with a time of 59.17 to earn 16 points.

Queiroz placed eighth in the men's 100-yard butterfly finals with a time of 50.63, scoring 22 points.

Schrieken led the Senators in the men's 400-yard individual medley, breaking the school record and placing third overall in 4:04.84 to earn 27 points. Oshiro finished fifth in 4:11.09 for 25 points, Williamson placed sixth in 4:11.22 for 24 points, and Tofani took seventh in 4:15.03 to add 23 points. Whitsed finished 20th in the C final in 4:32.11, earning five points.

In the men's 200-yard freestyle, Vallerini placed seventh in 1:42.69 to score 23 points, while Spehar finished eighth in 1:42.93 for 22 points.

The D&E women added a strong relay performance in the 400-yard medley relay, as Lockwood, Peterson, Hobson and Savannah Foley combined for a sixth-place finish in 4:08.99, earning 48 points.

On the men's side, the 400-yard medley relay team of Spehar, Whitsed, Williamson and Vallerini placed third in 3:25.12, adding 54 points.

After two days of competition, the D&E women sit eighth in the team standings with 196 points. The men moved from fourth to third place with 468 points, trailing only Findlay and Ashland, while Wheeling sits fourth with 388 points.

The MEC/GMAC Swimming Championships continue Thursday with a 10 a.m. morning session and a 6 p.m. evening finals session in Canton.
