Davis & Elkins Swimmers Set Multiple School Records on Opening Day of MEC/GMAC Championships

CANTON, Ohio — The Davis & Elkins College men's and women's swimming teams opened competition Tuesday at the Mountain East Conference/Great Midwest Athletic Conference Swimming Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium with multiple school records and strong scoring performances.

Sophomore Lasse Schrieken led the Senators by breaking the school record in the men's 200-yard individual medley during the morning preliminaries before resetting the mark again in the evening finals. Schrieken went on to place third overall in the finals with a time of 1:52.50, earning 32 points.

Davis & Elkins had a strong showing in the men's 200-yard individual medley, with four swimmers scoring. Payton Williamson placed 10th, Leonardo Oshiro finished sixth, and Tommaso Tofani added points with a time of 1:59.31.

In the men's 50-yard freestyle, freshman Gustavo Queiroz set a new school record in the morning preliminaries. That mark was later broken in the evening B final by Jan Spehar, who went on to win the heat and score 20 points. Queiroz later reclaimed the record while leading off the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, marking the third time the program record was broken in the event on the day.

The relay team of Queiroz, Spencer Willey, Oshiro and Charlie Whitsed placed seventh overall with a time of 1:28.65, earning 46 points.

The Senators also reset the school record in the men's 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Williamson, Oshiro, Schrieken and Queiroz finished fourth in 1:33.68, adding 52 points.

Freshman Leonardo Vallerini recorded a seventh-place finish in the men's 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:06.30 to score 23 points.

On the women's side, Davis & Elkins earned points in the 200-yard freestyle, as Daphne McCann, Emma Andrews, Jolie McGaughan and Maximilla Sutherland all contributed scoring performances.

The D&E women also scored in the 200-yard medley relay, as McCann, Courtney Luikart, Alyson Schaefer and Andrews placed eighth overall.

Julianne Hobson led the Senators in the 50-yard freestyle with a 13th-place finish in 25.01, earning 14 points. Savannah Foley, McCann and Lauren Lockwood also scored in the event.

After the opening day of competition, the D&E men sit fourth in the team standings with 243 points, while the women are eighth with 110 points.

The MEC/GMAC Swimming Championships continue Wednesday, Feb. 11, with a 10 a.m. morning session and a 6 p.m. evening finals session in Canton.
