ELKINS, W. Va. — The Davis & Elkins College wrestling team competed at the 2026 Mountain East Conference Wrestling Championships, hosted by Glenville State University, taking part in the league's full postseason championship field.
The Senators finished tied for seventh place with 22.5 points in a field that included West Liberty, Glenville State, Frostburg State, Fairmont State, Wheeling, Salem and Point Park. The championships featured multiple nationally recognized programs, including No. 9 Glenville State and No. 19 Frostburg State, along with West Liberty, Wheeling, and Fairmont State, all of which are receiving votes in the latest national rankings.
Davis & Elkins competed with one of the youngest rosters in the conference, as all Senators in the lineup were freshmen with the exception of junior Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro.
Freshman Logan Powell led the Senators with a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds, contributing seven team points. Powell recorded a 16-1 technical fall victory over Point Park in 5:00 and followed with a 4-3 decision against Fairmont State in 2:21, advancing through a competitive bracket before closing the championships against nationally ranked opponents.
At 157 pounds, freshman Jeston Showalter placed fifth and scored six points for the Senators. Showalter earned a 0-0 win by medical forfeit against Wheeling before securing an 11-4 decision over Fairmont State in 5:00, continuing his run through a deep weight class that featured multiple conference contenders.
Elsewhere in the lineup, freshmen Nicholas Daniel (133), Liam Young (165) and Aiden Maldonado (285) each faced challenging brackets that included matchups against wrestlers from Fairmont State, Frostburg State, Glenville State and West Liberty. Junior Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro (174) competed against wrestlers from Wheeling and West Liberty, providing veteran presence in a deep weight class.
The MEC Wrestling Championships served as an important developmental step for the Senators as they gained postseason experience against one of the strongest conference fields in the region.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Friday, Feb. 6, when the Senators host Code Red competition at the McDonnell Center in Elkins, West Virginia. The event will feature Point Park University and Salem University, with action scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
