Box Score SALEM, W. Va. — Matthew Gray scored a game-high 32 points, but the Davis & Elkins College men's basketball team came up just short in an 87-84 loss at Salem (W.Va.) on Saturday afternoon at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.
Gray finished 10-of-19 from the field, knocked down four 3-pointers and went 8-of-10 from the free throw line, adding nine rebounds in 38 minutes. The Senators shot 47 percent from the floor and held a 43-30 scoring edge in the second half but could not overcome a 14-point halftime deficit.
Salem led 57-43 at the break behind a strong first half from Zahki Fallen and Jamari Gamble. The Tigers shot 51.4 percent in the opening half and connected on six 3-pointers.
Davis & Elkins chipped away throughout the second half and tied the game multiple times down the stretch. Gray's free throws with 1:20 remaining gave the Senators an 84-83 lead, but Salem responded at the line, scoring the final four points to seal the win.
Noah Adamczyk added 14 points and three assists for D&E, while Darrius Roach and AJ Headley each scored 10 off the bench. The Senators finished with a 48-38 advantage in points in the paint and totaled 23 bench points.
Fallen paced Salem with 25 points, while Gamble added 24. The Tigers went 22-of-32 from the free throw line, including the final points in the closing seconds.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Monday, Feb. 2, hosting Point Park University (Pa.) at 6 p.m. in the McDonnell Center. The contest is a makeup from last week's postponed game.
