Late Push Not Enough as D&E Women’s Basketball Falls 84-80

ELKINS, W. Va. — West Liberty held off a late Davis & Elkins rally to earn an 84-80 Mountain East Conference victory Wednesday night inside the McDonnell Center.

The Hilltoppers jumped out to a fast start, shooting 52.9 percent from the field and hitting six three-pointers in the opening quarter to build a 25-8 lead. West Liberty carried a 46-29 advantage into halftime and maintained control through three quarters, leading 65-54 entering the final period.

Davis & Elkins made a strong push in the fourth quarter, outscoring West Liberty 26-19 and pulling even at 65-65 with just over seven minutes remaining. The Senators continued to apply pressure down the stretch, cutting the deficit to two possessions in the final minute, but West Liberty converted timely free throws to secure the win.

Jahniya Marion led all scorers with 28 points for the Senators, shooting 10-of-16 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Kylie Morris added 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Addison Boram finished with 10 points off the bench. Koi Shabazz and Briyana Sapp each scored five points, with Shabazz pulling down seven rebounds.

West Liberty was led by Jameka Brungard, who recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Olivia Baker added 18 points, connecting on six three-pointers, while Ana-Isabel Andersson Rodriguez contributed nine points and five assists. Jillian Huffman chipped in 10 points in 10 minutes of action.

West Liberty shot 38.8 percent from the field and made 10 three-pointers, while Davis & Elkins finished at 43.5 percent shooting and held a 42-30 advantage in points in the paint. Both teams finished with 43 rebounds, and West Liberty held a 39-28 edge in bench points.

Davis & Elkins returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 7, hosting Glenville State University in a Mountain East Conference matchup at 5:30 p.m. inside the McDonnell Center.
