Box Score ATHENS, W. Va. — Davis & Elkins men's basketball survived a thrilling finish to secure an 85-83 Mountain East Conference road victory over Concord on Friday afternoon at the Carter Center, sealing the win with clutch free throws in the final seconds.
The Senators (6-8, 3-4 MEC) and Mountain Lions were tied seven times in the opening half, with neither team able to create separation. Concord led by as many as nine, but Davis & Elkins answered behind timely shooting from Dontrell Jenkins and late baskets from Matthew Gray to go into halftime tied at 41-41.
Davis & Elkins briefly pulled in front early in the second half before Concord answered with a run to regain a nine-point lead. The Senators chipped away and tied the game at 69-69 with 5:05 remaining. Darrius Roach sealed the win at the free-throw line in the final seconds, despite a late 3-pointer from Anfernee Hanna.
Gray led D&E with 17 points and seven rebounds. Roach finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Jenkins added 13 points. Malachi Hampton contributed 12 points as the Senators outscored Concord 50-34 in the paint.
Concord was led by Hanna's game-high 32 points.
Davis & Elkins returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 14, at West Virginia State in Institute, W. Va. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. as part of Mountain East Conference play.
