Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins volleyball team opened play Friday at the Concord Volleyball Classic, falling in four sets to Kentucky State and later in straight sets to Rollins. Despite the setbacks, the Senators turned in several strong individual performances and pushed both opponents in extended rallies.
Game One: Kentucky State 3, Davis & Elkins 1
The Senators came out sharp in their first match, outlasting Kentucky State in a thrilling 28-26 first set. D&E's attack was fueled by Melisa Ozsar, who posted a match-high 12 kills while hitting .241. Sadie St. Mary was a reliable option at the net with eight kills on a .400 clip and added a service ace. Setter Keira Robinson directed the offense with 37 assists, while also collecting six digs. On defense, Neve Norris anchored the back row with a team-high 23 digs, and Saige Abbott chipped in five kills and two service aces.
Despite Kentucky State rallying back to take the next three sets, the Senators totaled 41 kills as a team and served up nine aces, showing their ability to score in bunches and apply pressure from the service line.
Game Two: Rollins 3, Davis & Elkins 0
In the second match of the day, D&E fought against a Rollins team that entered with eight wins on the season. The Senators battled late in the third set, nearly extending the match before falling 25-23. Ozsar again led the offense with seven kills, while Norris delivered three service aces to go with 10 digs. St. Mary and Braelyn Brenneman were active at the net, combining for three blocks, while Robinson and Emily Besten combined for 13 assists to pace the attack.
Davis & Elkins continues tournament play on Saturday with two early contests. The Senators face Bluefield State at 8 a.m. followed by Winston-Salem State at 10 a.m.
