Senators Rally Late But Fall to Point Park 8-7

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins softball team mounted a furious comeback in the fifth inning and pushed across two more runs in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as the Senators dropped an 8-7 decision to Point Park on Sunday morning at Joni Smith Field.

Trailing 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Senators (13-21) sparked a two-out rally that saw four straight hitters reach base. Gweny Wessling started things off with an infield single before stealing second base. Ashlyn Zapach brought her home with an RBI single to right, and Jules Gutierrez followed with a double to the gap in right-center, scoring Zapach to make it 6-3.

Meg Henkle kept the momentum going with a single to left, driving in Gutierrez and advancing to second on the throw. Lilly Saucedo then dropped a single into right field, moving Henkle to third, and Saucedo promptly swiped second to put two runners in scoring position. The threat ended there, however, as Allie Cuellar grounded out to short to strand both runners.

Cuellar would come through later, blasting a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Senators within one, but Point Park held on to secure the win.

Zapach finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Cuellar drove in a team-high three runs. Davis & Elkins pounded out 12 hits in total, including four doubles and the late homer.

Game two started with the Senators finding themselves in an early 5-0 hole in the bottom of the second inning before play was halted due to heavy rain. A makeup date is still to be determined.
