WHEELING, W.Va. – Despite a fourth-quarter surge, the Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse team fell to Mountain East Conference rival Wheeling, 13-8, Wednesday afternoon at Bishop Schmitt Field.
Sophomore Rylee Anderson led the Senators (5-7, 0-2 MEC) with four goals, including two in the final frame. Ari Hinton added a hat trick and Ke'ya Stevens chipped in a goal for D&E, which trailed 9-2 at halftime before rallying for six goals in the second half.
Wheeling (4-3, 2-0 MEC) set the tone early, scoring five unanswered goals in the first quarter and maintaining a lead throughout.
D&E goalie Megan Bauer made 11 saves on 24 shots on goal.
Wheeling capitalized on D&E's 30 turnovers and dominated possession early, jumping to a 10-2 advantage midway through the third quarter. The Senators responded with three straight goals, two from Hinton and one from Anderson, cutting the deficit to 11-5 entering the fourth.
Anderson and Stevens found the back of the net to pull D&E within four, but the Cardinals answered to seal the win for the hosts. Anderson capped the scoring with her fourth goal in the final minute.
The Senators held a 34-31 edge in shots and went 23-of-29 on clears, but were 0-for-12 on free position attempts. D&E also collected 24 ground balls and controlled 15 draws in the contest.
