D&E Opens Indoor Season With Strong Showing at YSU Icebreaker

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Davis & Elkins College men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2024-25 indoor season on Friday with a strong debut at the 14th Annual YSU Collegiate Indoor Track & Field Icebreaker, competing against a deep field featuring multiple Division I programs.

Senior Savannah Harman headlined the day for the Senators, winning the women's 5000-meter run in 17:32.44. Her performance came within four seconds of the D&E school record, setting the tone for a dominant showing by the women's distance group. Rebecca Tellez placed third in 17:40.20, followed by Lydia Falkenstein in fifth at 17:50.90 and Lauren Twyman in 17:52.40 as D&E placed four runners inside the top 10. Junior Zoe Belshan placed 13th clocking in at 18:34.55. 

On the men's side, senior Jordan Thomas earned runner-up honors in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:43.56. Konnor Allison added a top-20 finish in 15:04.83, with Andrew Bowen (15:25.65), Aiden Granger (15:44.79), Nick Gallo (15:51.99), Christopher Lucas (16:11.40) and Andrew Stein (16:26.12) rounding out a deep D&E presence in the event.

In the women's mile, Jeanne Pelissier led the Senators with a fourth-place finish in 5:19.13. She was followed by Cameryn Wheeler in seventh at 5:24.11 and Sierra Taylor in 13th at 5:28.21.

The men's mile produced another series of strong results. Cooper Gibson finished fifth overall in 4:20.10, with teammates Slate Swiger (seventh, 4:21.31), Tommy Bildheiser (ninth, 4:21.64), Fletcher Van Heuven (16th, 4:28.37), Paul Langkopf (25th, 4:37.29), Landon Sweitzer (26th, 4:41.21) and Gavin Whorton (35th, 4:50.07) helping the Senators secure six top-35 placements.

In the middle distances, Taytum Walls placed eighth in the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:24.90. On the men's side, Ian Wood ran 2:02.43 to finish 20th.

The meet marked the first indoor competition of the season for Davis & Elkins, providing a strong foundation for the months ahead.
