MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Davis & Elkins College men's and women's swimming teams continued their early-season slate Saturday at the West Virginia State Games, hosted by Division I West Virginia University.
The Senator men's team placed third overall with 554.9 points, trailing only WVU and Wheeling, while the women finished fourth with 385.5 points in a competitive field featuring Division I and II programs.
Senior Charlie Whitsed highlighted the meet for D&E with a time of 57.52 in the 100-yard breaststroke — the top performance by a non-Division I competitor. Whitsed's swim also marked the best performance of any Division II athlete at the event, finishing second overall in the 100 breaststroke. The Senator men additionally posted the top Division II relay finish in three of four relay events, further emphasizing their strong showing against upper-division competition.
Fellow Senator Jan Spehar posted a 47.97 in the 100-yard freestyle, and Leonardo Vallerini added a 1:47.36 in the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Payton Williamson also contributed valuable points to the team total.
On the women's side, junior Julianne Hobson led the effort with strong sprint results, recording a 26.07 in the 50-yard freestyle and a 57.09 in the 100-yard freestyle. Junior Savannah Foley followed with competitive finishes in both events, while sophomore Lauren Lockwood clocked a 1:04.17 in the 100 backstroke.
The Senators will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, hosting Frostburg State University in their first home meet of the season. The dual is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside the George A. Myles Pool in Elkins.
