BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The Davis & Elkins College men's and women's tennis teams opened competition Thursday at the ITA Atlantic Regional, hosted by Bloomsburg University at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.
In men's singles, the Senators secured several victories. Santiago Ordonez advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Johan Karlsson of West Virginia State. Filippo Buffo followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win against West Chester's Alessandro Melotti, while Justus Petersilie defeated Salem's Thijmen Wessel, 6-2, 6-0. Christo Wirahadipoernomo rallied past Heinrich Lindeque of West Virginia State, 7-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Philipp Fedorczuk closed out the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bluefield State's Alessandro Perez.
On the women's side, three Senators competed in singles play. Liebe Oosthuizen fell 6-3, 6-2 to 11th-seeded Asel Calbay of Indiana (Pa.). Fabienne Lahn dropped her match to 16th-seeded Amanda Menendez Thomasson of West Virginia State, 6-1, 6-2, while Lilly Wentzler was topped by 13th-seeded Maria Fonseca of Fairmont State, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, the men's pair of Petersilie and Fedorczuk picked up a key win, defeating second-seeded Haruto Kusunoki and Gabriel Masu of Fairmont State, 8-6. The duo of Wirahadipoernomo and Buffo fell 8-4 to West Virginia Wesleyan's Felipe Mioch and Jheng Min Huang.
For the women, Erin Laubscher and Oosthuizen battled but came up short against Bloomsburg's Jennifer McDonald and Nicole Ilkovic, 8-5.
