ELKINS, W.Va. – The Davis & Elkins College women's soccer team rallied with three unanswered goals but came up just short in a 4-3 setback to Point Park University on Wednesday night at Nuttall Field in Mountain East Conference play.
The Pioneers (5-2-1, 4-1-0 MEC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 20 minutes behind goals from Chloe Hollott-Lo, Rebecca Pihlgren, Maria Fusillo and Paula Solé.
The Senators (0-5-3, 0-4-2 MEC) found their response late in the first half when freshman Rafaela Leão scored her first goal of the season on a free kick in the 42nd minute to cut the deficit to 4-1.
In the second half, Davis & Elkins mounted a strong comeback. Freshman Sophia Brown netted her first career goal in the 80th minute, followed just two minutes later by fellow freshman Hanna Tomas, who also recorded her first career goal off an assist from Macy Shropshire.
All three D&E goals marked the players' first tallies of the season. The Senators finished with a 20-5 advantage in shots and a 12-5 edge in shots on goal, while Point Park goalkeeper Frederieke Rijlaarsdam tallied nine saves to preserve the win. Olivia Jones made one save in net for D&E.
The Senators return to action Sunday, Oct. 5, traveling to Wheeling University for a 2 p.m. MEC matchup.
