TROUTVILLE, Va. -- Davis & Elkins got two big wins in Day One of the Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament with wins over Notre Dame College and the University of Charleston.
The Senators defeated Notre Dame, the MEC North's #2 seed, 4-2 in extra innings and bumped Charleston, the MEC South's #1 seed, by a score of 4-3.
D&E will face off with Fairmont State, the MEC North's top seed on Saturday at 2pm. The two teams are the only teams that escaped the first day unscathed. West Liberty and Frostburg State both lost two games each and were eliminated from the tournament.
GAME ONE, D&E 4 – NDC 2
Davis & Elkins got things started early when
Linzey Allard scored on an
Honesty Holt single down the right field line to put the Senators up 1-0 in the top of the first inning.
Notre Dame evened the score in the bottom of the second when Alyssa Wahl singled in Alexi Maciejowski and then went up one when Ella Collinsworth scored on a Mia Cipriano single. The Falcons led 2-1.
The two teams failed to score in the next two innings as they had difficulty advancing runners beyond second.
In the fifth inning, D&E knotted the score at 2-2 when
Kailynn Parks scored an unearned run on a fielder's choice.
In the eighth inning, pinch runner
Gweny Wessling scored as Holt was in the midst of a rundown between first and second. When Wessling scored, Holt advanced safely to second. Parks then singled to left field and scored Holt, putting D&E up 4-2. The Senators then retired the side and advanced in the winner's bracket.
Allard went 4 for 4 at the plate, scoring a run. Holt and Parks also had multiple hits in the contest.
Vanessa Hunt pitched eight innings for D&E, giving up seven hits, two earned runs, and striking out seven batters in the win.
GAME TWO, D&E 4 – UC 3
Davis & Elkins again jumped out to a fast start, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. First, Allard doubled to left center, scoring
Anjolina Gutierrez. Then Holt singled up the middle, scoring Allard.
Charleston added a run in the bottom of the third inning when Lindsey Reavis scored on a Jeritza Montero single to right field to cut into the D&E lead 2-1.
The Senators scored twice more in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.
Maddie Lavelle singled to right center field and brought home
Alyssa Haynes. Then Allard scored on a Holt single to right center.
The Golden Eagles cut into the lead and made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning when Emma Groe singled to center field scoring Carlie Odejewski and Isabella Andujar, but D&E escaped with a 4-3 win.
Holt went 3 of 4 at the plate with 2 RBIs to lead the Senators. Allard was 2 of 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.
Saylor Kneeland pitch seven full innings, giving up seven hits, three earned runs, and striking out five batters in the win.
