ETTRICK, Va. -- Davis & Elkins picked up a split with Virginia State on the road, falling in the first game 8-2, but rallying late in the second game to win 13-8.
GAME ONE
D&E fell behind early as Virginia State put together a five-run second inning and a three-run fourth inning to take an 8-0 advantage into the fifth inning.
The Senators scored in the top of the fifth when
Maddie Lavelle singled to left field and
Linzey Allard crossed the plate.
D&E scored again in the top of the seventh on a
Lorena Ruiz-Rubio sacrifice fly that plated
Jules Gutierrez.
Saylor Kneeland was handed the loss for the Senators.
Gutierrez, Lavelle, and Allard each had two hits in the game. Lavelle and Ruiz-Rubio each batted in a run.
GAME TWO
In Game Two, the Senators found themselves behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning when
Sharon Morales singled to the shortstop and Gutierrez scored to make the game 2-1 Virginia State.
The Senators evened the score in the top of the third inning as
Anjolina Gutierrez crossed the plate.
In the bottom of the third, Virginia State scored two run and scored twice more in the bottom of the fourth to take the 6-2 advantage.
In the top of the fifth,
Mia Ely plated
Ashlyn Zapach on a single to center field to pull within 3.
The Senators' bats got hot in the sixth, scoring eight runs in the top of the inning.
Anjolina Gutierrez and Allard scored on a Zapach double to right center. Zapach then scored when
Maddie Lavelle singled to left center.
Alyssa Haynes singled to left field and plated
Rachel Jones. Then,
Trinity Fleming scored on an Allard single to left field.
Anjolina Gutierrez closed out the eight-run inning with a three-RBI triple to center field that scored Allard, Morales, and Haynes.
Virginia State scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to 11-7 Senators.
 D&E scored twice more in the seventh inning. First, Ely reached on an error by the short stop and
Jules Gutierrez scored. Then, Morales reach base on a fielder's choice, scoring Ely.
Virginia State scored a run in the bottom of the inning, to bring the final to 13-8 D&E.
Allard had three hits, two runs, and an RBI in the game.
Jules Gutierrez had three hits and two runs. Zapach had two hits, two runs, and two RBIs.
Anjolina Gutierrez had one hit, two runs, and three RBIs.
Alexa Uphold pitched five innings to pick up the win for the Senators.
