FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Coach
Elle Fracker's Davis & Elkins College softball team made Duvall-Rosier Field on the campus of Fairmont State University their home away from home this weekend. Today, D&E swept the doubleheader with the Falcons. The Senators took game one 5-4 and followed that up with an 8-2 win in game two.
Game One
Trinity Cossette opened the scoring in game one. In the bottom of the second Cossette smacked a triple to right center to bring in
Rachel Jones and
Maddie Lavelle.
Sharon Morales would bring Cossette home on a single to left field. The Senators led 3-0 after two complete innings. Fairmont would get a run in the top of the third, but D&E would add an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-1 heading into the fourth inning. The Falcons would answer in the top of the fifth, scoring 3 runs, (2 earned).
Sharon Morales came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth. Morales came up big for the Senators, hitting a solo home run over the center field fence.
Haley Grindstaff would hold FSU scoreless the final three innings.
Morales finished the game going 2-3 at the plate with two hits and two runs batted in. Jones was also 2-3 in the game. Cossette was 1-3 with two RBI.
Linzey Allard,
Honesty Holt, and Lavelle each had one hit. Grindstaff earned the win, pitch a complete game giving up 4 runs, 3 earned and striking out five.
Game Two
The Senators plated five runs the first two innings Allard started the scoring in game two, hitting a single to bring in
Kailynn Parks. Allard would score on a Falcon error to make it 2-0 after an inning. FSU would plate a run in the top half of the second. D&E would score three in the bottom half of the inning, to make 5-1 after two complete innings. Fairmont scored a run in the top of the third, that would be end of the scoring for the Falcons. Davis & Elkins would add three more runs.
D&E took advantage of five Falcon errors.
Jules Gutierrez had two hits.
Mia Mendoza, Allard, Holt, and Lavelle each had a hit.
Ava Willis went the distance to earn the win. Willis gave up two earned runs on six hits.
Davis & Elkins improves to 4-15 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain East Conference.
Fairmont State drops to 4-10 and 0-4 in the MEC.
The Senators return to the field Tuesday, traveling to Greensburg, Pennsylvania for a doubleheader with Seton Hill.
