FROSTBURG, Md. — Davis & Elkins women's lacrosse could not overcome a second half surge from Frostburg State in a 19-9 loss in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Semifinals on Tuesday night at Bobcat Stadium.
Limited to just three goals in the second half, Davis & Elkins (5-6) could not overcome the multi-goal deficit for a second time as Frostburg State pulled away.
The Bobcats peppered goalie
Marissa Cuevas with 54 shots, placing 41 on goal. Cuevas came up with 22 stops, while
Hanna Bond and
Angelina Horan scored three goals each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After some early turnovers, Frostburg posted the first goal of the day for a 1-0 lead. Horan broke the ice for Davis & Elkins, finishing off a pass from Bond and knotting the game at one with 23:54 left.
- Frostburg posted the next six goals for a 7-1 edge. The game of runs continued in the opening half as D&E finally put things together with five consecutive markers, slicing the deficit to 7-6.
- Paige Graff, Horan and Courtnie Couch closed the scoring run for the Senators in response to the Frostburg run.
- Off a D&E turnover, Anna Kearney delivered a transition tally with just under two minutes remaining in the first half for an 8-6 Bobcat lead.
- Bond raced down the left side for the opening goal of the second half, making it a one-goal game once against at 8-7. On the ensuing defensive trip, Davis & Elkins locked down as a unit, forcing a wide shot from Frostburg with the possession clock winding down.
- The Bobcats pushed its margin back to a two-goal advantage with a timely tally at 26:35 in the second half. Frostburg won the next draw control before racing up the field for a quick strike, pushing the lead to 10-7.
- Frostburg asserted itself with a seven-goal run, ballooning the lead to 15-7 with 17:12 left.
- Trailing 16-7, Cuevas made several acrobatic stops with less than 15 minutes left. Graff slotted home a man-up marker into the lower part of the cage at 13:08, bringing D&E to within 16-8.
- Horan bounced home her third goal of the playoff clash, making it a 17-9 game before the Bobcats added the final two goals.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Cuevas mustered just one save on the first eight shots of the game, eventually settling in as the first half progressed, stopping six of the final seven shots in the opening 30 minutes.
- Frostburg was able to get possession started in many instances following its success in the draw control area, winning 10 consecutive into the second half.
- The Bobcats posted four consecutive markers in less than five minutes, turning a one-goal lead into a four-goal margin.
- Cuevas, the league's Defensive Player and Freshman of the Year, amassed 61 combined saves in three meetings with Frostburg State this season.
- Frostburg advances to the MEC Championship game this weekend against Notre Dame (Ohio).
- Monday marked the first MEC playoff appearance for the D&E women's lacrosse program.
