ELKINS, W.Va. -- West Virginia State outscored Davis & Elkins by eight points in the final six minutes of action to defeat the Senators, 88-80, on Wednesday night at the McDonnell Center.
Tied at 69-69, WVSU's Treohn Watkins hit a three and Gus Stone made a jumper for a quick 5-0 run and give the Yellow Jackets a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way. West Virginia State was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to help secure the win.
Sam Rolle IV had a game-high 27 points, six assists and four rebounds for the Senators. He was just two points shy of tying his career high, going 9-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.
Breland Walton netted 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Anthony Pittman filled the box score with 26 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Stone added 19 more for WVSU, and Watkins scored 16.
Gyasi Powell and
Kyle Leslie had 10 points each for the Senators and
Fable Burden III made impact plays on both sides of the floor in 31 minutes of action.
The Yellow Jackets held a 28-10 edge in bench points and raced out to a 19-10 advantage in fast break points.
Davis & Elkins is set for a quick turnaround, visiting Alderson Broaddus tomorrow (Feb. 25) for a 6:00 PM tipoff.
